Whether managing a bustling hotel pool or enjoying a backyard swimming area, proper signage is more than just a formality. It is a vital part of keeping swimmers safe and informed.

Pool signs serve as silent lifeguards, guiding behavior, preventing accidents and ensuring compliance with local regulations. From “No Diving” warnings to emergency contact information, the right signage can make all the difference.

If an accident should happen and proper signage is not present, you may be accused of “failure to warn”.

Safety Meets Regulation

Commercial pools found in hotels, gyms, apartment complexes, and public recreation centers are subject to strict health and safety codes.

Signage isn’t optional. It is legally required to be visible to all pool users so don’t let architecture or landscape obstruct anyone’s ability to read and comprehend. Poor placement of permanently mounted signs, signs that are on movable basis and foliage that grows wild in front of signs commonly obstruct views.

Key signs for commercial pools include:

• Rules and regulations. A prominently displayed list of pool rules (e.g., no running, no glass containers, no diving in shallow areas) helps set expectations and reduce liability.
• Depth markers. Clearly visible markers on the pool deck and walls indicating water depth are essential for preventing diving accidents.
• No lifeguard on duty. If the pool is not staffed with a trained and certified lifeguard, this sign must be visible to inform swimmers they are responsible for their own safety.
• Emergency contact information. Include 911 instructions and the location of the nearest phone or emergency device.
• Chemical warnings. If the pool uses chlorine or other chemicals, signage should warn of potential hazards and provide safety instructions.
• ADA compliance. Pools must be accessible to all. Signs indicating accessible entry points or equipment (such as pool lifts) are required.
• Emergency motor shut offs. Pools and spas should have emergency shut offs in the event of entrapment or other emergency situations. These shut offs should be prominently marked.
• Children’s safety. Children should never be left unattended. The number one cause of children drowning is the momentary lapse of adult supervision.

Use bold fonts and contrasting colors for visibility. Ensure signs are weather-resistant and UV-protected to withstand outdoor conditions. Include multilingual text in areas with diverse populations.  Consider picture signage as well.

Safety Starts at Home

While private residential pools are not subject to the same regulations, signage still plays a crucial role in preventing accidents, especially when children or guests are present.

Essential signs for personal pools include:

• No diving and/or shallow water. Even if the pool looks deep, diving can be dangerous. A simple sign can prevent head and neck injuries.
• Pool rules. Customize a sign with house rules, such as “No swimming without an adult,” “No pets in the pool” or “Dry off before entering the house.”
• Gate warning. If the pool is fenced – and it should be – post signs reminding guests to keep gates closed and latched. Gates should always be designed as self-closing and self-latching. Gates should be locked when the pool is closed.
• Emergency instructions. Post CPR steps or emergency contact info near the pool area.
• Electrical hazard warning. If the pool has lighting or nearby outlets, warn swimmers to avoid electrical equipment when wet.

Personal pool signs can be both practical and playful. Consider custom signs with a family name or a funny phrase to catch the eye (swimsuits required) and encourage reading on.

Local and state laws vary, so it’s important to check with a municipality or health department. Failing to post required signage can result in fines or liability in the event of an accident.
